Manuel Bosch Barret was born in Centelles, a municipality near Barcelona, in 1895; a lawyer of English descent on his mother's side, enamored with the Anglo-Saxon world; a bourgeois traveler; a regular at the Ateneo of Barcelona and in the political and literary circles of the Catalan capital; an avid reader, cultured and cosmopolitan. From 1936 to 1939, he served as President of the International Mixed Tribunal of the New Hebrides (present-day Vanuatu), recounting his experiences in Three Years in the New Hebrides (1943).
